Anawa Tiwathandize (‘let us empower these children’ in Chichewa, which is the
primary national language of Malawi), is a charitable organization, a nongovernmental
organization (NGO) newly registered in Malawi, with an affiliate in the
United Kingdom (UK).
The Malawi Government has made commendable progress in entrenching and
promoting the rights of persons living with disabilities, including children. However,
due to the fact that Malawi is a Least developed Country (LDC), despite there being
political will and the commitment, the resources are not always there to match the
needs that are actually on the ground.
It is in this context that Anawa Tiwanthandize was birthed – to meet an urgent
need that has been identified. Anawa Tiwanthandize aims to complement the efforts
of the Malawi Government. The needs are so great that there is no risk for duplicity.
Currently, Anawa is at a fund raising stage to set up the necessary structures to
operate. These include but are not limited to:
▪ raising funds and engaging companies and organizations to enable it to
secure land and build a special needs primary and secondary school in the
capital Lilongwe (Schools Programme);
▪ raising funds to secure radios to distribute to every household with a child
with special needs. Many children in rural areas are isolated and lonely, and
the radio will be the only way to connect to the outside world via media and
thereby trying to combat isolation and loneliness (Afikilidwe Programme);
▪ raising funds to secure and provide specially adapted bikes to ease the travel
burdens of a family with a disabled child. Many families with disabled children
have to walk miles to enable them to access hospitals or government
services (Apepukidwe Programme);
▪ raising funds to procure and distribute wheelchairs to every child in need of
one in Malawi because Malawi currently has no statutory requirement for the
council to provide wheelchairs to disabled children hence often families are
on their own (Wheel Chair Programme);
▪ raising funds to equip disabled accessible wet rooms and toilets in all
children's wards in Public hospitals in Malawi (Pediatric Wet Rooms
Programme);
▪ subject to availability of funds, embarking on a housing project, a radio
station project, and a respite break project in the foreseeable future.
